Interim Higher-Ed. Commissioner Named; Presidential Search at MSU Nearly Over

According to The Clarion Ledger, Mississippi’s coordinating board for higher education has picked Aubrey Lucas, the former president of the University of Southern Mississippi, to temporarily head the state’s higher-education system. He replaces Thomas C. Meredith, who stepped down from his post as commissioner last Friday in the wake of a landscaping controversy, which also led to the resignation of the interim president of Mississippi State University, Vance H. Watson, the daily newspaper based in Jackson, Miss., reports.

Meanwhile, The Commercial Dispatch reports that the Mississippi board may be just days away from naming a permanent president of Mississippi State. The board was close to making its pick but put the search on hold after the landscaping controversy. Watson was reportedly a finalist for the job until he came under investigation for improperly authorizing $12,333 in landscaping work in 2007 at the home of Commissioner Meredith, the newspaper reports. Although the board has declined to reveal the names of the candidates, Mark Keenum, a U.S. Department of Agriculture undersecretary, and Gary Miller, provost at Wichita State University and an MSU alumnus, are believed to be favorites for the post, The Commercial Dispatch reports.
