The University of Chicago Medical Center’s new 10-story pavilion will feature a modular interior that will make it “extraordinarily flexible,” allowing economical reconfigurations of space that won’t disrupt other operations, according to James Madara, the medical center’s chief executive.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the $700-million pavilion will be based on modules 31.5 feet on each side and 18 feet high. The building, designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects and Cannon Design, will pick up extra space by bridging Maryland Avenue in the university’s neighborhood, Hyde Park.

The university’s trustees approved the design last week, and construction is to begin next year. The building is due to open in 2012. Mr. Viñoly’s firm also designed the university’s Graduate School of Business, which opened in 2004.
