The video-game industry “isn’t particularly fond of reading research papers from academia,” says Philip Tan, executive director of U.S. operations for the recently announced Singapore-MIT International Game Lab. But industry leaders are more than happy to look over well-designed games, and a growing number of colleges seem intent on generating those titles.

As Wired News observes, college video-game programs are popping up all over the place — at research institutions like MIT and Michigan State University and at art schools like Expression College for Digital Arts, in California. Some of the programs encourage students to develop high-minded “serious games,” but others attempt to prepare students for careers in commercial game design. —Brock Read
