Governors' Association Urges More Accountability in Academic Performance

The National Governors Association is urging states to measure student achievement more thoroughly in order to improve academic performance, ensure that tax dollars are being used wisely, and foster economic growth. An issue brief, released today by the bipartisan group, which represents the nation's chief state executives, calls on states to go beyond federal reporting requirements for graduation rates, for instance, and include degree attainment by part-time students and those who transfer among community colleges.

I would urge more accountability in gubernatorial performance, starting with Illinois.

I am amazed at the simplistic way supposedly educated people view the problem with education. Schools can easily meet graduation rates--give away grades and graduate everyone! Is that what we want? While the issues facing education are multiple, if one has to focus on one, it is poor student preparation in the K-12 years. Students come to 2- and 4-year colleges without the necessary skills to do college level work. Clean up K-12 (primarily by getting administrators who are not politicians but rather committed to high quality education and positive leadership).

hemount: the brief actually advocates for moving AWAY from simple graduation rates to a more sophisticated assessment of student achievement. so that might address your concerns.
