Gone With the Windfall
A computer glitch at Old Dominion University produced unexpected tuition refunds for 78 students in recent months, and now the university wants the money back. The students, some of whom got as much as $10,000 to $15,000 through the error, are not happy about the payback request, reports an article in The Virginian-Pilot, in Norfolk, Va.
Officials are blaming the computer problem on a software upgrade made last year. The mistake was discovered in August. Letters were sent to the students about 10 days ago explaining the situation and demanding that the refunds be returned. No doubt some of the recipients have already spent their windfalls. —Jeffrey R. Young
