Faculty Members and Librarians Take to the Picket Lines at the U. of Windsor
Faculty members and librarians walked off the job at the University of Windsor after talks to avert a strike broke off at 2 a.m., according to the Canadian Press. The strike involves 1,045 full and part-time professors and librarians who have been without a contract since June. The university has canceled today’s classes for 16,000 students. Medical and dental students will continue their classes off campus.
The union says it is fighting for more money for part-time faculty members, saying they receive the lowest wages in Ontario, according to The Windsor Star. Other issues include salary, teaching standards and concerns over the university’s attempts to introduce “instructional teachers,” who have less experience and, in many case, less-advanced degrees than the current faculty. The union believes such teachers would have a negative impact on teaching, research, and graduate programs. The faculty voted 96 percent in favor of today’s strike.
