Escape via Automatic Purge

The University of Nebraska at Lincoln’s records have disappointed both the Recording Industry Association of America and 13 university students purported to be “music pirates.”

As part of an aggressive new campaign to discourage illegal file-sharing, the recording industry trade group had requested that the university identify 36 students who used computers known to have visited file-sharing sites, according to the Associated Press. But the university purges its computer records every 31 days, and officials said they have no way of identifying nearly two dozen alleged illegal downloaders — who will therefore remain anonymous this time.

Next month, however, students may not be so lucky as the RIAA is likely to begin demanding names the same month as violations occur. — Sierra Millman
