Elbows, Lobos, and Low Blows
Topping the list of people that Tweed hopes never to meet in a dark alley (or on a soccer pitch): No. 15, Elizabeth Lambert, a defender for the University of New Mexico Lobos.

I'd say that Ms Lambert is exhibiting aberrant behavior that goes beyond competitiveness. She should be suspended from playing, and should be given counseling.

Ban her from the league.

Counseling and jail time for assault. She should not be allowed to play.

I think she should be arrested and jailed for assault.

Where were the refs??? Several of those were red card offenses.

"Cat fighting"? Because both the person throwing the punches and the person being slugged in the spine are women? Whoever wrote that tagline deserves a kick in the shins from No. 15.

This is reprehensible. The player should be suspended indefinitely. And the coach who condones this kind of vile behavior should be canned.

Agree with everyone else.

The Associated Press is reporting that New Mexico suspended Lambert today (Friday), and that the Mountain West Conference endorsed the Lobos' action. Lambert also apologized for her play, in a statement released by New Mexico. AP story is at http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iZ_PgegKQv4wXlNeqy69EFBdSVYwD9BQ8KK80

She should transfer to the University of Florida and play football for Urben Meyer. Not only would he look the other way, he'd probably give her a raise.

it's just a foul... part of the game... gotta be ready when things get rough... the refs will decide ( if they catch it )...

The MWC needs to address how a camera operator could be more aware of what's going on in the soccer game than the referees. This is not part of a normal game. At the first hint of any of this, a halfway decent referee puts a stop to it, and at second hint the player is gone or at least carded for persistent infringement (and gone after the third time).

This is worse than a foul, this is assault -- a crime.
14. jspsusa - November 06, 2009 at 06:05 pm
like i sed... up to the refs (during the game)... police can come later...
15. 12052592 - November 06, 2009 at 06:27 pm
jspsusa: so if I play a game with you with no refs, I can expect to be beat up? Of course not. Assault has NOTHING to do with soccer, with or without a good ref. What she engaged in is fit for a street fight (they don't even allow hair pulling in mma).

Re: comment No. 6: The "catfighting" tagline is courtesy of the person who posted the video on YouTube. ESPN disabled the "share" function on its video:

A subsequent video discusses Lambert's suspension:

#6: Catfighting has long been the descriptor for two chicks fighting. Live it, love it, learn it.

The fact is there is a record of this player's crimes. There should be punishment.

I realize few of you have ever broken a sweat (other than a nervous one before MLA interviews) before, but this is nothing the referees could not handle, if they were doing their jobs. Assault charges? Settle down, Poindexter!
Academics have little business commenting on sports, seeing as none of them got picked anyhere but last during recess. ;)
