Dialing Down
When the University of Florida unveiled GatorLink -- a free dial-up service that offers remote access to the Internet -- students, faculty, and staff logged on in droves. But that was almost a decade ago.
In an era of broadband networking and wireless access, GatorLink now seems a bit quaint. The network, which once boasted 20,000 users, is down to about 4,000. So campus officials have decided to start charging users $5 a month for the service, and they're considering shutting GatorLink down for good.
Mark Hoit, the university's interim chief information officer, told The Gainesville Sun that GatorLink simply isn't fast enough for most students. "You get an attachment and you're dead, on a dial-up line," Mr. Hoit said. "If you're really trying to do work, dial-up is not an effective way to do modern work."
