Demanding More Out of Data Centers
It might seem that the managers of data centers don't have much to think about: As long as they can keep their computers from breaking down or being hacked, they're doing their jobs, right?
Not necessarily, say researchers at Carnegie Mellon University. The institution has announced the formation of the Data Center Observatory, a facility that will act both as a data center and as a test bed for scholars studying how to make data-collection more automated and efficient.
As data centers find themselves dealing with ever-larger blocks of information, officials have grown more concerned about the facilities' efficiency (or lack thereof). After all, the centers are typically lined with "large clusters of power-hungry machines" that can ring up daunting energy bills, according to Greg Ganger, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Carnegie Mellon.
