Course-Management Software Doesn't Come Cheap

Students tend not to mind when their colleges levy annual technology fees. But when they have to pay individually for every class that uses WebCT’s course-management software, they start feeling as if they’re being nickel-and-dimed, reports the Hattiesburg American.

The University of Southern Mississippi charges students $10 per credit hour for every course they take that incorporates WebCT. That’s hardly a prohibitive cost, but it’s enough to bother some students. And the student frustration has led some professors — many of whom had just posted course syllabi or assignments on the site — to stop using WebCT altogether.

Campus officials say fees are paying for an upgrade to Southern Mississippi’s course-management software. But they can’t be excited to see professors abandoning the site. —Brock Read
