Congressional Science Panel to Weigh In on P2P
Peer-to-peer file sharing on college campuses is getting wider attention in Congress. A panel of the House Committee on Science and Technology plans to hold a hearing next month on possible technological solutions to reduce digital piracy on college campuses.
A spokesman for the panel said today that the hearing has yet to be officially announced and the date set. But Safwat Fahmy, chief executive of the Florida-based SafeMedia Corporation, said today that the hearing was scheduled for June 5. He will submit written testimony to the panel describing a technology his company has developed that allegedly thwarts illegal file sharing, he said. Several weeks ago he visited with representatives of the House science committee to push the technology, he added.
"Higher education is allowing theft under the banner of freedom of education," Mr. Fahmy said during a telephone conversation. He also said SafeMedia had hired a lobbyist in Washington to help advance its agenda. --Andrea L. Foster
