Colleges Arm Themselves in the Fight Against Online Diploma Mills
Fighting Internet diploma mills can be a tedious and financially unrewarding task, but many colleges say they have no choice but to do it. And ever more often, campus officials are taking it upon themselves to make fly-by-night fake-diploma sites go away.
As the Associated Press reports, institutions like Kansas State University are firing off cease-and-desist letters to Web sites that sell ersatz transcripts and diplomas. The colleges’ rationale is simple: “We have to stay vigilant about protecting the brand,” said Todd Cohen, a spokesman for the nearby University of Kansas. —Brock Read
