Canadian Province Gives $248-Million to University Institute on Energy

The government of the oil-rich province of Alberta is giving more than $248-million, or 260 million Canadian dollars, to the University of Calgary for its Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment, and Economy.

With the money, the institute will add space, starting this fall, for 650 more undergraduates and 350 more graduate students. In addition, the university plans to hire 100 new faculty members and set up 25 research chairs. The university says new labs and programs will give the students hands-on experience in commerce, economics, energy, environmental engineering, geology, and sustainable development.

Although the provincial government says the move will help deal with a shortage of workers in the energy industry, the CanWest News Service quotes a former official at the institute as saying that the money will be insufficient to build everything planned. —Karen Birchard
