Can Nintendo Actually Encourage Reading?

A new Web browser for a handheld Nintendo console has David Rothman of TeleRead wondering if we’ll soon be reading e-books on video-game machines.

The browser, which will come in the form of a cartridge designed by Opera, is said to make surprisingly effective use of the Nintendo DS’s small screens and buttons. The browser may not be an immediate hit, but it raises the possibility that miniature game machines could become popular for text reading, not just shoot’em-ups, according to Mr. Rothman: Is the day coming when Wal-Mart will sell e-book-enabled versions of these babies for $49.95–with games sales keeping the price of the unit low? And how about the possibilities of a whole range of e-book-enabled games machines?
