Call for Participation: Readers' ProfHacker

We interrupt your regular ProfHacker programming to call for your participation in an end-of-semester idea by channeling Dana Carvey’s grumpy old man for a moment:

You kids today, with your mp3 players and your celebrity playlists and your peer-to-peer file sharing… In my day we had to use fat, bulky analog equipment to create what we called “Mix Tapes” for ourselves and our friends and we liked it that way.

Sure, the tape might deteriorate over time, or you might hear the ghost of another track playing softly underneath the track you happened to be listening to, but we just decided to think that this was cool. If you listened to the tape long enough, it just sounded like a bunch of random hisses and clicking, or like something out of the movie Poltergeist, but we didn’t care. We just made that noise into our new favorite kind of music.

Thank you, grumpy old man, that’s enough for now. Okay, so the aforementioned “end-of-semester idea” looks like this:

  • Basic Idea: You—yes you—are to create a “mixtape” of your favorite ProfHacker blog posts (or your favorite ProfHacker-ish blog posts found on other sites).
  • Guidelines: You can only include 10 things, so choose wisely. Try to make the different posts related to each other in some way:
    • maybe they’re all about teaching with technology;
    • maybe they’re all about how to maintain a healthy and tasty diet without spending a fortune or using up 3 hours every night in the kitchen;
    • or maybe they’re all tips and tricks for doing your regular tasks more efficiently.
    • The possibilities are many. Include a brief paragraph explaining your selection criteria, no more than about 150 words at the most.
  • Deadline: December 11, 2009, which is one week from today.
  • How to submit: Send an email to George.H.Williams+ProfHackerPlaylist@gmail.com.
  • How to ask questions: Just send ‘em in an email to the same address, please.
  • Publishing your “playlists”: We will do our best to publish your playlists soon after you submit them, but given that everyone’s pretty frazzled right now with end-of-semester busy-ness, we ask that you be patient if it takes us a bit longer.

Thanks very much, y’all!
