California State U. System Halts Work on 130 Construction Projects
More than 130 building projects on 23 California State University campuses have been forced to a halt by the state government’s cash-flow crisis, the university system has announced. The stoppage affects projects worth a total of $848-million, but system officials says they hope the work will resume within 90 days.
The system had asked the state’s finance department to exempt 23 projects from the statewide freeze imposed because of the cash crunch, but finance-department officials turned down the request. System officials say the halt could jeopardize $135-million in nonstate funds dedicated to the projects, as well as $4.4-million in energy-efficiency projects.
The Cal State projects join a number of others that have been halted on higher-education institutions throughout the state, including projects at University of California campuses like the one at Irvine, and at community colleges like Shasta College.
