Thinking About Sustainability at a Community-College Conference

Bouncing Green Balls and 'Sustainability Fatigue'

Ithaca, N.Y. — Opening remarks at the sustainability conference at the Institute for Community College Development discussed “sustainability fatigue” — the worry that sustainability is an overused word, used to sell products that really aren’t all that green.

On that note, one couldn’t help but notice the toys given away here at the conference: green rubber balls, loaded with batteries and LED lights, with Chevron’s logo printed on them. They light up when bounced.

Chevron is a sponsor of the conference. Lee Riddell, the assistant director of the institute, said that when she opened up the box from Chevron and saw the balls, she considered sending them back. Then she and others at the conference decided to put them out. Maybe they’ll start a conversation about the true meaning of sustainability, she said.
