Believe the Hype
Business 2.0 profiles a Web service that has been alternately described as a handy tool for music fans and as "the future of all media:" the Hype Machine.
The tool automatically keeps tabs on scads of MP3 blogs — Web sites on which people regularly post their favorite songs, new and old — and, in doing so, provides audiophiles with a constantly updated, almost encyclopedic guide to any number of music trends du jour.
Could the site’s creator — Anthony Volodkin, a 20-year-old Russian immigrant who now studies at the City University of New York’s Hunter College — be the latest in a line of undergraduates to hit it big online? Venture capitalists are calling, but legal obstacles could stand in the site’s way. MP3 blogs allow copyrighted songs to be downloaded by anyone, and while Mr. Volodkin is careful not to promote piracy on the Hype Machine, his service does point users to plenty of files that are free for the taking. —Brock Read
