The American Institute of Architects is giving its 2008 Architecture Firm Award to KieranTimberlake Associates, which has designed buildings and planned renovations for a number of colleges. And the institute’s Topaz Medallion for Excellence in Architecture Education goes to the Chicago architect Stanley Tigerman, a founder of the Archeworks design school at the University of Illinois at Chicago and a former director of the architecture program there.

Kieran Timberlake has worked at Cornell University, Middlebury College, the University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University. The firm, now 23 years old, traces its roots to the Penn’s architecture school, where Stephen Kieran and James Timberlake met. Both later worked for Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates, the firm headed by Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown. Kieran Timberlake is still based in Philadelphia.

The AIA awarded its annual Gold Medal to the architect Renzo Piano. The awards were announced at midday.
