Applicants Chart Their College Chances

As high-school students gear up for the zero-sum game that is the college admissions process, a growing number of them are using Naviance, a Web-based planning system, to manage the mazes of applications, recommendations, and transcripts.

The service, which was started four years ago, has lured students thanks in part to its flashiest feature—a graph that lets students judge their chances of making it into a college by comparing their attributes to those of others who have already been accepted or rejected. (The New York Times)
