Apple Recalls Its Exploding Laptops
Evidently laptops made by Dell aren’t the only ones with a propensity for exploding (The Chronicle, August 17): Apple is now recalling almost two million of its own machines, citing fire risks.
Like the recalled Dell computers, the Apple laptops use lithium ion batteries, manufactured by Sony, that are prone to overheating. A number of laptop models sold between October 2003 and August 2006 contain the defective batteries, according to CNET News.
The Dell recall has left some colleges scrambling to warn students and take inventory of their own machines, and it’s likely that Apple’s announcement will make even more work for IT officials. —Brock Read
