Apple Asks Computer-Training School in Canada to Stop Using an Apple as Its Logo

Apple Inc. sent a threatening legal letter to the Victoria School of Business and Technology in August demanding that the school stop using an apple as its logo. But the school isn’t budging, and its president has posted a letter online calling Apple a bully.

The for-profit school, which focuses on computer training and uses Apple computers at its campuses, has used a blue-and-green-colored Apple as its logo since 2005. The logo has a drawing of a mountain in it, a reference to the symbol of its sister company, northStudio.com. Apple’s logo is silver with a bite taken out of it.

“Apple has the right to commence legal proceedings to restrain your activities and to recover its related damages,” a lawyer representing Apple wrote in a letter to the school.

The school’s president, Dieter Gerhard, wrote back that its logo is distinct and that it does not infringe on Apple’s trademark. “I must say we are feeling somewhat bullied by your letter and are not particularly impressed,” he wrote.

The school now displays its logo and Apple’s logo side-by-side on its Web site and asks visitors to vote on whether Apple has a point. —Jeffrey R. Young
