Alumnus Stung Twice in Security Snafus
The University of Minnesota-Twin Cities probably shouldn't expect a check from Brian Stuckey this year. Mr. Stuckey -- a recent Minnesota graduate -- was a bit miffed when the university told him, in August, that his personal information was on a computer stolen from the institution's Institute of Technology.
But what really upset Mr. Stuckey, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, was a letter he got from the university just a few weeks later. In that message, campus officials said Mr. Stuckey's data were also on another missing machine -- a laptop, belonging to the university's art department, that had been stolen during a professor's summer trip to Spain.
There's no evidence that anyone has misused Mr. Stuckey's personal information. But it's hard to fault the alumnus for his suggestion that "maybe the university needs to re-evaluate how they treat student data." --Brock Read
