AASHE Announces Campus Sustainability Leadership Awards
The Association for the Advancement for Sustainability in Higher Education has announced its sustainability awards for 2008. The association reviewed a record number of entries for those awards this year.
The 2008 Campus Sustainability Leadership Awards went to institutions of various sizes. In the large-institution category, Tulane University won for initiatives in green building, waste and emissions reduction, and efforts to get students involved in sustainability programs. Among mid-sized institutions, Ithaca College won for its commitment to various national and local sustainability programs, its green-building achievements (the college may be the first to have two platinum LEED buildings), and its educational programs.
Because it is a small institution, Northland College, in Wisconsin, is often overlooked by those making lists of “most sustainable colleges.” No more. It won the AASHE leadership award in the small-college category — in part for sustainability programs the college has operated for decades.
The College of Menominee Nation won the AASHE leadership award for two-year institutions. Harford Community College received an honorable mention.
Sarah E. Brylinsky, a senior at Ithaca College, won the Student Sustainability Leadership Award. Ryan Graunke, a recent graduate of the University of Florida, won the Student Research on Campus Sustainability Award for his paper, “Food and Fuel: Biogas Potential at Broward Dining Hall.”
