A Microsoft OS Sans Spyware?
The process of upgrading to Vista—Microsoft’s new operating system, set to arrive in stores later this year—is bound to result in plenty of long workdays for campus CIO’s. But the effort may be worth it: According to some early reports, Vista could drastically reduce the spread of spyware.
The software was designed, in large part, during a particularly bad run of security revelations for Microsoft, so experts say it may come out of the box safer and stouter than some of the company’s previous operating systems. Some analysts, in fact, are already heralding the impending death of specialized anti-spyware software. But the companies that make security software—and many of the PC users who recall promising press clippings about Windows XP—say they’re less than convinced of Vista’s invulnerability. (CNET News)
