A Data Leak That Could Scarcely Be Stopped
You can build firewalls around your campus network, stop using Social Security numbers to identify students, and scrub sensitive data from office computers. But sometimes, if you’re a college administrator, there’s just no way to avoid dealing with a computer-security breach.
A case in point: A laptop stolen in September from the insurance firm Hilb, Rogal & Hobbs contained the names, birth dates, and driver’s license numbers of 1,200 students and staff members at Villanova University, according to Insurance Journal. The university didn’t do anything wrong, but it’s still left with the task of telling its students and employees that their personal information was left out in the open. —Brock Read
