A Call for a New Kind of Starchitecture

A news analysis about Frank Gehry and green architecture appears in today’s Chronicle:

“It feels odd to look up at a Frank Gehry building, with its floating, cascading stainless-steel roof and angular conglomeration of shapes, and think: It’s not radical enough. That was the thought that bubbled up as I stood outside the new Lewis Library at Princeton University recently, and it was not about the aesthetics….

“My feeling had more to do with what the building represented. In the past two decades, the most elite and ambitious colleges have commissioned buildings by ‘starchitects’ for notoriety….

“We are in a different era now—the green era—and we need a new kind of star architecture to go with it.”
