A Business-Management Breakdown
Call it the data network from hell: Lansing Community College's misfiring administrative software cost the institution millions of dollars, and lost the college's president her job, according to a new report.
The report, commissioned by the college's Board of Trustees, estimates that Lansing's business-management software made costly errors on more than 80 percent of the financial-aid checks it cut in the fall. The software, designed by Oracle, also delayed financial-aid payments to about 1,900 students -- a fiasco that ultimately led to the resignation of the college's president, Paula Cunningham.
Defenders of the administration have argued that the report should be taken with a grain of salt: It was prepared by SunGard Collegis, which shares a parent firm with SunGard SCT -- one of Oracle's few competitors in the business-software market. (Lansing State Journal)
