$100-Laptop Creator Responds to Bill Gates

Nicholas Negroponte, leader of an effort to create a $100 laptop for students in developing nations and the former head of the Media Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, had some snappy comebacks for Bill Gates, who recently criticized the $100-laptop project. Mr. Negroponte spoke at a conference in Boston for Linux developers yesterday, and he unveiled some new details about his low-cost computer. But most of the news-media coverage has turned on what he had to say about Mr. Gates, who last month called the computer too weak to meet the needs of students.

Said Mr. Negroponte: "It’s not about a weak computer….It’s about a slim, thin, fast computer." He added that the developers of the $100 laptop are actually working with Microsoft to try to get a version of Windows to run on the machine. "So jeez, why criticize me in public?" he added. For now, the laptop is still expected to run Linux, not Windows. (The Boston Globe)
