Faculty Members at Missouri Southern State U. Vote No Confidence in President
Faculty members at Missouri Southern State University voted no confidence in the president, Bruce Speck, on Monday, calling him a "failed leader." The resolution passed by a vote of 140 to 44. In response, Rod Anderson, chair of the university's Board of Governors, told The Joplin Globe that the board would "duly evaluate" the situation. "Lord knows we've got issues that we need to stay on top of to keep this boat afloat," he said. "So, no, there's not going to be a change tomorrow. But timely reviews are probably appropriate."

Binghamton U. Puts Basketball Coach on Leave
In another hit to the Binghamton University athletics department, the university announced today that it had placed the head men's basketball coach, Kevin Broadus, on indefinite paid leave after he admitted to inappropriately contacting recruits, the Associated Press reported. The basketball program has been rocked by allegations of player misconduct and pressure on faculty members to inflate athletes' grades. In the wake of those problems, an athletic director has resigned and the State University of New York system has stepped in to oversee an audit of the "integrity of the athletic and academic enterprises" at Binghamton.

President of St. Vincent College, a Top Aide in Bush White House, to Step Down
St. Vincent College announced today that its president, H. James Towey, would resign at the end of the academic year. Mr. Towey, who was director of faith-based initiatives in the administration of President George W. Bush, has led the small Roman Catholic liberal-arts college near Pittsburgh for four years. Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki told The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Mr. Towey "succeeded in moving the college from being a well-respected regional college to a nationally recognized college of excellence." President Bush delivered a commencement address there in 2007.

U. of Kentucky to Pay $3-Million in Settlement With Former Coach
After months of lawsuits and negotiations, the University of Kentucky has reached an agreement with Billy Gillispie, its former basketball coach, who sued the university and its athletics program for breach of contract when he was fired after his first two seasons. Mr. Gillispie was working under a memorandum of understanding, a legal document that served as an employment contract but left many details murky. According to the settlement, the university agreed to pay Mr. Gillispie $2.9-million and cover $260,000 in legal and mediation fees. Lawsuits brought by the university and by Mr. Gillispie will be dropped.

Boeing Will Trim Its Tuition Program for Employees
The Chicago-based aerospace giant has announced that it will end its open policy of tuition reimbursement for employees. It will continue to cover tuition for classes toward degrees deemed strategic for the company. According to The Seattle Times, Boeing was covering course work for 21,000 employees in disciplines ranging from mortuary science to wine appreciation.

Audit Questions Vendor Payment to U. of Kansas Athletic Director
In a new audit released on Thursday, the Kansas Board of Regents said that the University of Kansas' athletic director, Lew Perkins, had received income from a third party that is also a vendor of the athletics department. According to the Associated Press, he had a contract worth $18,000 a year with the company, and he had disclosed the tie on a state form. The audit recommended that Mr. Perkins's relationship with the vendor be "independently evaluated for appropriateness."
