Johns Hopkins U. has broken ground for a
four-story engineering-research facility on its Homewood
campus. The 69,000-square-foot building, which will have open floor
plans, is expected to house the computer-science department as well
as multidisciplinary research institutes focusing on extreme

Shop Talk: Nonrevenue Sports Facilities Need Love, Too
The architecture firm HOK has been picked
to design a $321-million medical-school complex for the State
U. of New York's U. at Buffalo, beating out three other teams of
finalists—Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects and Cannon Design; Rafael
Vinoly Architects with Foit-Albert Associates; and Grimshaw and
Davis Brody Bond. Construction is expected to begin next year and

Shop Talk: Federal Agency Pulls $400,000 From College's Dome Project
The renovation and expansion of the Campus Commons at
the State U. of New York at New Paltz has earned its architects,
ikon.5, a merit
award from the New Jersey chapter of the American Institute of
Architects. The project, completed two years ago, added 12,000
square feet—and a sculptural glass enclosure—to a 1970 building.

broken ground for Dineen Hall, which will house the College of
Law when construction is completed in 2014. The five-story,

Shop Talk: For a Building in the Big City, Cornell Picks a Big Name
The
latest of the artist James Turrell's "Skyspace" installations
opens to the public next month at Rice U. At dawn and dusk,
visitors to the two-level outdoor facility will see extended light
shows that play out on a white ceiling surrounding a square opening
through which to look at the sky. Other campus Skyspaces are
at the U. of Illinois at Chicago and Pomona

Shop Talk: U. of Texas Book Storage Will Be Remote Indeed
The City of Waverly, Iowa, is moving ahead with
plans
to build an elegant band shell designed by Ann Cashman and
Darian Lu, who graduated from Iowa State U. last weekend with
architecture degrees. The shell, made of colored recycled glass,
would help audiences hear concerts by the Waverly Municipal Band.
