In South Carolina, Public Colleges Resist a Merger Proposed by State Legislators
Downtown Charleston, S.C., has the kind of higher-education presence many larger and more prosperous cities might envy.
The city is home to the College of Charleston, a public liberal-arts college dating to the colonial period. Just a few blocks away sits the Medical University of South Carolina, which is among the top 100 institutions in the nation in research expenditures.
