Tampa, Fla.

Susan MacManus, a distinguished professor of political science at the University of South Florida, built her academic career by crunching data and conducting expansive research about Florida politics.

But for the past 20 years, she has also built a reputation as a local and national media personality with a seemingly equal amount of passion.

At the Republican National Convention last week, Ms. MacManus was an active and willing participant in the media and political circus
