March Madness has taken on new meaning in the University of Delaware’s athletics department. On Monday the university offered Kevin Willard the job of head men’s basketball coach, replacing David Henderson, who was fired on March 13 after a 9-21 season. Mr. Willard, who was an assistant at the University of Louisville, accepted the Delaware job on Tuesday morning.
But an hour later, David Roselle, the university’s president, withdrew the offer after hearing complaints from trustees, according to the Wilmington News-Record.
The hang-up: Mr. Willard pleaded guilty to a driving-under-the-influence charge two years ago, and trustees didn’t think that set a good example for students. How did Delaware officials find out about the incident? From Mr. Willard himself, who mentioned it in a job interview.
