Yale Starts Special African-American Studies Ph.D. Program

Yale University is establishing a Ph.D. program in which students will get a joint doctoral degree in African-American Studies and a more traditional discipline.

The faculty of Yale's Graduate School unanimously voted to establish the new program last week.

Yale is among several institutions that are moving to create doctoral programs in black studies. Temple University established the first doctoral program in black studies in 1988.

Yale sees black studies as
