Faculty members at Yale University have approved changes in the university’s tenure process designed to help it better compete for talented junior professors. The changes, which were recommended in February, bring Yale closer to the tenure-track system in place at most similar universities. Under the current system, nontenured faculty members must wait for a colleague to retire, to leave, or to die — or to be lucky enough to work in a department that adds a tenured position. As the Yale Daily News reports, the new system will guarantee that financial resources will be available to tenure all junior professors who meet the university’s requirements for research and scholarship. —Scott Smallwood
