Employees at New Mexico State University have voted to unionize, the Associated Press reported on Thursday.
In a mail-in election that began on May 4, 559 of the university’s nonexempt workers—who include secretaries, librarians, and other nonfaculty jobs—voted to choose the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees at their bargaining agent, according to unofficial results revealed this week. About 302 workers voted against the union. In all, 1,290 nonexempt employees were eligible to vote.
The election, whose results are unofficial, will be certified on June 8. The university has said that it will respect the results.
