This collection of research about female scientists owes its existence to the efforts of a male scientist, the late James Hirsch, former dean of graduate studies at Rockefeller University. Mr. Hirsch, according to the book's preface, was acutely concerned about the failure of the academy to draw on the scientific capabilities of women.
