With Students Mostly Gone, McCain Now Visiting College Campuses

Late last month, an analysis suggested the expected Republican nominee for president, John McCain, was avoiding college campuses. As if on cue, he seems to have quickly turned that around.

In the past four weeks, Senator McCain has visited at least four college campuses — the University of Denver, Missouri State University, Daniel Webster College, in New Hampshire, and Burlington County College, in New Jersey.

The May 22 analysis by The Christian Science Monitor had concluded that the expected Democratic nominee, Barack Obama, made far more visits to college campuses because of the strong support he enjoys among younger voters.

Yet only five days after that analysis was published, Mr. McCain was on the University of Denver campus, delivering what his campaign described as a major speech on nuclear-weapons policy. The speech, 11 days before the university’s commencement ceremony, was interrupted by several protesters who shouted and held signs in opposition to the war in Iraq.

Things went better for Mr. McCain at the three other college campuses, all of which he has visited in just the past week, with only one reported instance of an audience heckler. In all three instances, however, the senator visited the colleges well after spring graduation ceremonies were concluded.
