University of Vermont trustees learned the hard way what a liability a presidential spouse can become, and they hired a new leader Wednesday whose wife will be subject to unusual oversight from the board.

E. Thomas Sullivan, former provost of the University of Minnesota, was named Vermont's next president on Wednesday. The job came with the notable requirement that the role of Mr. Sullivan's wife, Leslie Black Sullivan, be more clearly defined than that of any other presidential
