Sixty-one members of the Wisconsin Legislature have sent a letter to the University of Wisconsin at Madison demanding that a controversial lecturer be fired. According to an Associated Press report, the lawmakers want the university to sack Kevin Barrett, a part-time lecturer who is scheduled this fall to teach an introductory course on Islam, because of his outspoken belief that the U.S. government orchestrated the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Mr. Barrett, a member of Scholars for 9/11 Truth (The Chronicle, June 23), was informed by the university’s provost two weeks ago that he could teach as scheduled (The Chronicle, July 12). The lawmakers sent the letter after the Legislature declined to consider voting on it as a resolution.
