A California jury has awarded $660,000 to a music professor at the College of the Desert who said she had been defamed by her former boss at the two-year institution, according to The Desert Sun, a newspaper in Palm Desert, Calif.
But the same jury cleared the college and the official, a now-retired dean of instruction, of charges of sexual harassment and discrimination. It was unclear who would pay the $660,000 judgment. The lawyers for both sides claimed victory. But both also said they would appeal. —Elyse Ashburn
