Williams College Joins Movement to Divest in Sudan-Related Companies

Williams College’s Board of Trustees announced on Tuesday that it would refuse to invest funds from the college’s billion-dollar endowment in any of 28 companies that, it said, support the Sudanese government’s “genocidal actions” in the Darfur region. According to a news release issued by Williams, the college has no direct investment in any of the companies right now. The move followed similar announcements by other wealthy colleges and universities in recent weeks. Smith College approved a divestment policy a month ago (The Chronicle, May 8), and just last week Brown University added to the number of companies in which it will not invest (The Chronicle, June 5).
