William and Mary's President Steps Back From Daily Duties

The president of the College of William and Mary, Gene R. Nichol, says he’s relinquishing some of his day-to-day administrative duties to the college’s provost. William and Mary officials say the shift is intended to allow Mr. Nichol to spend more time raising funds and to be more visible on the campus and with alumni and Virginia lawmakers.

Conservative bloggers, however, are linking the news to flak Mr. Nichol took for temporarily removing a cross a year ago from a campus chapel.

The “very routine” job adjustment has nothing to do with the cross controversy, said Brian Whitson, a college spokesman. “The president is still making all major administrative decisions.” —Paul Fain
