Will Academic Jobs Be More Plentiful or Even Scarcer in the Future?

I can only assume that the article about job hunters is meant to make those of us heading into our third year on the market more hopeful ("For Job Hunters in Academe, 1999 Offers Signs of an Upturn," January 29). As always, of course, such stories only amplify the unreality of a situation that, statistical evidence or not, remains bad for many of us and isn't likely to get much better. I find
