Why Not Save Jellyfish as Well as Whales?
Sports teams, car companies, and children's television shows all use animals as symbols. But not just any animals: The kids get dinosaurs and puppies, while the auto manufacturers and team owners tend to prefer predators like cougars and hawks. In the animal-behavior courses I teach, my students find lions and gorillas more interesting than spiders or lemmings, even if each species demonstrates the same behavior.
