White House Backs a Bill to Overhaul Supercomputing Programs

The Bush administration has endorsed a bill to revamp the federal government's supercomputing programs. The proposed legislation would give scholars access to cutting-edge computers and help return the nation to a dominant position in the field.

Under the bill -- the High-Performance Computing Revitalization Act of 2004 (HR 4218) -- the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy would gain authority over federal agencies' supercomputing projects. The Energy
