Whistle-Blower at Alabama Community College Wins $2.5-Million Jury Award

A federal jury awarded $2.5-million last month to a former vice president at Shelton State Community College who was fired after reporting allegations of fraud and unethical conduct.

Ted D. Spring, who referred questions about the case to his lawyer, sued the now-retired president of the Alabama college, Thomas E. Umphrey, in early 2000. The jury awarded Mr. Spring back pay, emotional damages, and punitive damages.
