Where Are the Male Community-College Students? Where Are the Female Auto Mechanics?
To the Editor:
The growing number of women in higher education isn't just a community-college phenomenon -- it is showing up in four-year colleges as well ("Community Colleges Start to Ask, Where Are the Men?," June 28). The reason is obvious: Formal education has a bigger economic payoff for women than it does for men. Men are still able to get relatively decent blue-collar jobs that don't require degrees; women can't get these jobs and require more formal education to get anything
